Short "Thank You" Script for Lieu:
Hello! My name is _______, and I am a constituent of Representative Lieu's in ____________, California. I'm calling to thank the congressman for his co-sponsorship of a Resolution of Inquiry, and his call for an independent commission and a special prosecutor to investigate possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government. I agree with him that there is nothing more important than getting the full story on whether our President is under the influence of a foreign government. Thank you!
Short Script for Brownley & Knight:
Hello! My name is _______, and I am a constituent of Representative _________’s in ____________, California. I'm calling in hopes that she/he will join Congressman Ted Lieu in calling for an independent commission and a special prosecutor to investigate possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government. The current House Intelligence Committee investigation is hopelessly compromised by the actions of its Chair, Congressman Nunes. [Knight only: I would also like Representative Knight to vote for Congressman Lieu’s Resolution of Inquiry into these allegations.] There is nothing more important than getting the full story on whether our President is under the influence of a foreign government. I will watch closely to be sure that the Congressperson makes this independent investigation a top priority for our country. Thank you!
Last week, in public testimony before the House Intelligence Committee, FBI Director James Comey confirmed that the President and his campaign are under investigation for possible collusion with the Russian government to influence the outcome of the 2016 election in Trump's favor. Since then, the situation has grown even murkier: the Associated Press broke a story documenting former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's secret, paid work for a Russian billionaire to "greatly benefit the Putin government"; and the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Devin Nunes, was forced to admit that he had received classified information under dubious circumstances, then revealed what he had learned to President Trump instead of to his own committee. Nunes said, “It’s about the politics of this. And I just thought that it was more important for me to get to the president of the United States, because Mr. Schiff was going to find out.”
As of Monday, ranking committee member Adam Schiff and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi were calling for Nunes to step aside and allow someone else to run the committee's investigation. Earlier this month, Rep. Ted Lieu, whose district includes part of the Conejo Vally, and his colleague Rep. Hakeem Jeffries offered a Resolution of Inquiry that could compel Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to publicly disclose far more information than they have to date. Rep. Lieu also has called for an independent commission and special prosecutor to look into the Trump-Russia matter, on the grounds that Nunes has tainted the Intelligence Committee's work. Rep. Julia Brownley is on record calling for an investigation, but has not yet sought an independent inquiry. Rep. Steve Knight has yet to comment on the matter.
