Hello, my name is __________, and I am a constituent of Senator/Representative ___________'s in _______________, California. I am calling to urge the senator/congressperson to use every tool available -- beginning with legislation -- to prevent Trump from firing Special Counsel Mueller. Congress must assert its power now to prevent a constitutional crisis. I urge the congressperson/senator to issue a clear statement on this matter, and to co-sponsor H.R. 3771 (in the House) / S. 1735 or S. 1741 (in the Senate), to show her/his support for protecting Mueller and this investigation. Thank you!

BACKGROUND
Last week the New York Times reported what has long been suspected: Trump would like to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller, and tried to do so last June. His White House Counsel prevented the firing then, but that doesn’t mean the independent investigation is safe. A smear campaign by Trump and his GOP enablers continues to portray Mueller and his investigation as illegitimate, and Congress so far has failed to enact protections for the Special Counsel’s office.

As Mueller’s investigation continues to get closer to the truth, he becomes more at risk of being fired. The Senate Intelligence Committee has made clear that it will not investigate Trump’s obstruction of justice attempts - ceding that responsibility to Mueller. Trump's firing of FBI director James Comey last year represented obstruction of justice, but firing Mueller would be far worse — since Mueller's job entails protecting the investigation from political interference. It is the duty of Congress to guard against abuses of the Executive Branch, so our elected officials need to speak out and make clear that firing Mueller would be a red line that Trump must not cross. It is now more crucial than ever to protect Mueller and his investigation.
