Hello, my name is __________, and I am a constituent of Senator __________'s in _______________, California. I am calling to thank the Senator for her vote against last month's continuing resolution, and to urge her to hold the line on a clean DREAM Act during negotiations leading up to the January shutdown deadline. There can be no funding for Trump's border wall, or any of the Republicans' other draconian anti-immigrant measures, attached to this bill. The American people have been waiting for months for Democrats to show moral leadership on this issue, and to actually get this bill done. Thank you!
Late last month, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (finally) joined Sen. Kamala Harris and most other Democrats in opposing the latest continuing resolution funding the government until January 18, since it did not restore protections for the Dreamers or contain other Democratic priorities. Now Republicans are trying to un-tether the DREAM Act from the budget bill that must pass before the next deadline, beginning with a meeting among congressional leaders today. Since Trump terminated the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which has provided relief from deportation for an estimated 800,000 young immigrants, the Dream Act has gained overwhelming public support as well as bipartisan approval in Congress -- except for some Republicans (including Trump) who demand wall funding or other "riders" be attached to any bill protecting the Dreamers.
Democrats must not be afraid to threaten a shutdown if their priorities are not included in this essential bill. DREAMers must be protected from Trump's deportation machine before DACA beneficiaries begin becoming eligible for removal in March, so time is of the essence!
