Hello, my name is __________, and I am a constituent of Senator/Representative ___________'s in _______________, California. I am calling to urge the senator to reject the Continuing Resolution passed yesterday in the House, which included $5 billion in funding for Trump’s wall. I don’t want any of my tax dollars to support a racist, xenophobic border wall. The Senate has already passed a clean CR, and it is up to the House to pass a clean bill to keep the government open. Thank you!
Funding for several critical functions of the federal government expires at midnight on Friday, December 21, and Trump seems to have decided he’ll shut those departments down if he doesn’t get money for his unnecessary, xenophobic border wall. Trump is throwing a temper tantrum, demanding $5 billion in funding and threatening to veto a Continuing Resolution already passed by the Senate that would keep the government running until next spring.
Last night House Republicans capitulated to Trump’s demands, leaving Democrats in the Senate to defend American values and reject the House’s bill. This is a crisis entirely of Trump’s own making. Democrats, and most Republicans, don’t want to shut down the government over Trump’s wall, especially after voters resoundingly rejected Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda in the 2018 midterms. The pressure on Democrats to compromise is peaking — but the vast majority of analysts still believe a border wall of the sort Trump envisions would be an ineffective deterrent for immigrants. Its symbolism, however, would be disastrous for a "nation of immigrants." Democrats must stand firm against giving Trump a victory for xenophobia and racism.
