Hello, my name is __________, and I am a constituent of Senator ___________'s in _______________, California. I am calling to urge the senator/congressperson to oppose Mike Pompeo's nomination as Secretary of State. Pompeo would take Trumpism global -- promoting anti-Muslim bigotry and ending the Iran nuclear deal, pushing for war against North Korea, denying climate change, perhaps even creating another torture regime. These are all positions he has taken in the past, and there's no reason to think he wouldn't do so again in such a powerful position. Thank you!

BACKGROUND
Trump's musical-chairs rearrangement of his administration's upper echelon took a frightening turn when he announced he would seek to promote CIA director Mike Pompeo to head the State Department, then replace him at CIA with onetime "black site" commandant Gina Haspel. Pompeo's confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is scheduled for Thursday morning. When Pompeo was confirmed for his CIA post last year, California Sen. Dianne Feinstein was one of 14 Democrats who supported his nomination. This time, with the 2018 elections looming, Republican control of the Senate down to a razor-thin 51-49 majority, and Sen. Rand Paul already having indicated he will vote against Pompeo because of his history of supporting the use of torture, the vote is expected to be closer.

Pompeo's critics say he is too eager to please Trump, and they fear that he will encourage Trump’s hawkish instincts on sensitive issues like North Korea’s nuclear program and the Iran nuclear deal. As a GOP congressman from Kansas, Pompeo argued that American Muslims were “complicit” in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings because, he said, they had not denounced it — despite the fact that many U.S. Muslim groups and activists had loudly condemned the attacks. American Muslim and human rights activists held an event Monday on Capitol Hill highlighting what they called Pompeo’s “anti-Muslim record” and “the consequences of nominating an Islamophobe to serve as America’s top diplomat.” Meanwhile, the Center for American Progress issued a press memo declaring Pompeo “too hawkish and too extreme” for the State Department, noting that he opposes same-sex marriage, has called for “regime change” in Iran and has “a sordid record of anti-Muslim bigotry.”
