Hello, my name is __________, and I am a constituent of Senator ___________'s in _______________, California. I am calling to urge the senator to sign on to Chris Van Hollen’s suggestion that Senate Democrats block all measures in the Senate that are unrelated to funding the government, until Mitch McConnell allows votes on re-opening it. Senate Republicans have an important constitutional role here, and they must be forced to do their job instead of cowtowing to President Trump’s immoral demands for a border wall. The American people demand that the government reopens without investing in Trump’s bigotry. Thank you!
The partial government shutdown has lasted 17 days — and Trump says he’ll veto any legislation to reopen the shuttered departments that doesn’t include more than $5 billion in funding for a border wall. House Democrats passed bills last week that provide no such funding — the same bills that passed the Senate in December with bipartisan support, before far-right pundits shamed Trump into insisting on wall funding as part of any deal. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has announced that he won’t allow the Senate to consider any measure that doesn’t have Trump’s support, abdicating his responsibility to lead a co-equal branch of government.
On Sunday, Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen tweeted a suggestion that Senate Democrats should refuse to provide “unanimous consent” allowing action on any bill that’s unrelated to ending the shutdown, until McConnell allows votes on the measures passed by the House. Several senators have signed on to Van Hollen’s proposal, which would take effect as early as Tuesday; Indivisible, MoveOn and the AFL-CIO have endorsed it as well.
