Hello, my name is __________, and I am a constituent of Representative ___________'s in _______________, California. I am calling to thank the congressperson for supporting universal background checks on firearms purchases, and to urge her/him to do more during this session to curb our nation’s epidemic of gun violence. Restoring the ban on assault weapons, and limiting the capacity of ammunition magazines, are the very least that the House should pursue this year in order to show leadership on this issue. Regardless of the current bill’s chances of passing the Senate and being signed by Trump, Democrats must provide that leadership and show the American people that one party, at least, is on their side. Thank you!

House Democrats unveiled legislation on Tuesday to expand background checks to nearly all firearms purchases. The measure is HR 8, reflecting its introduction on the eighth anniversary of the mass shooting in Arizona that nearly killed Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. A companion bill was introduced Tuesday in the Senate as well, though it will face a tougher road in that Republican-controlled chamber.

The bill would require background checks for almost all firearm purchases, including those sold at gun shows and over the internet. There would be limited exceptions, including for law enforcement officers and for guns transferred between close family members. Polls have shown that nearly 90 percent of Americans support universal background checks for all gun purchases.
