Next Tuesday evening, August 15, is a vital one for activism in our area. The Conejo Valley Unified School District board of trustees will hold its first meeting of the new school year that evening ... and its agenda is expected to (finally!) include a vote on approving the use of Sherman Alexie's "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" for the high school English curriculum. Many of you know what a contentious issue this has been over the last two months -- and you have seen board president Mike Dunn behave with an appalling lack of professionalism or rationality where curriculum materials are concerned. It's essential that we achieve a strong presence of First Amendment and education advocates at Tuesday's meeting -- including activists who are willing to speak. We'll keep you updated as the week progresses, the board's agenda is set, and our strategy develops. The public portion of the meeting is set for 6 p.m..
